History of Mendota Heights MN

The name of the settlement was taken from the Dakota word “mdto-te” which means “meeting of the waters.” The Mendota area was acquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The area was renamed twice in just a couple of years and in 1805, James Wilkinson, commanding general of the US Army and governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory, through Lt. Zebulon Pike, purchased 155,000 acres including over half of Mendota Heights for possible future military posts. It is in the area where construction on what would later be Fort Snelling began in 1819. The settlement grew economically and militarily over the years and in 1858, the village of Mendota became a part of the Mendota Township, where it would remain until 1887 when it was incorporated once again as a village. On February 21, 1956, the residents of the remainder of Mendota Township voted to incorporate the Village of Mendota Heights.
